I don’t know if many of my friends have lived it a football town. And I’m almost certain none of my friends have lived in a football town where the team was trying to make it to the Superbowl. I live in one of those towns and tonight’s the night, it’s not looking good. It’s halftime and the Pats are up by 18. I’m not saying it’s impossible but it doesn’t look good. Apparently there’s a “history” with the Colts and the Pats and it’s not in the Colts favor. Living in a football town is a whole new experience, everyone here cares. There seems to be an unwritten (and quite possibly written) rule that for three days before a game you wear blue. If you don’t wear blue you’re obviously not from here. I learned this at the library of all places. The librarian said “Where ya from?” I said “Utah, how’d you know?” (all the while thinking the word mowuhn, lyburry or creyuhn had been in our conversation somewhere and that’s how she knew I wasn’t a local.) She said “You’re not wearing blue.” Yes, in fact of the two dozen people (quiet librarians included) I was the only one there without a horseshoe somewhere on my person. Later at the grocery store I was one of three people that I saw without Colts gear (the other two happened to be the moosh and my husband) These people take their football S E R I O U S L Y. In Utah there’s the legendary Utah/BYU game and in all reality that’s really more of a battle of religion than sports. Football here is a religion, and its congregation is loyal. Tomorrow may be a very sad day for the Church of Colts Pigskin. We’re safely neutral locked away in our house, but we do have Colts cookies and that’s enough to make me love this game.
