Modesty is a big deal to me. For both religious reasons and personal reasons.
The personal reasons being my chubby knees.
The religious reasons being respect for myself and for the religious garment I choose to wear.
Somedays I believe it would be easier to mill about town in a habit than try to keep everything tucked in, covered and in its place. Take my trip to Florida with my sister last year:
It would have been a lot easier to wear a strapless bra and go without the undershirt. But I would have felt naked and constantly worried that something was going to pop out at a very bad moment. Of all the places to be wearing a sundress properly it’s on the beach in Florida, but I couldn’t do it. I had to be covered.
Then there was my 23rd birthday/going away dance party extravaganza. Again. Had to be covered.
While the undershirts are well and good, they’re not always the greatest option.
Which leads me to my most favorite clothing find of all.
Fancy dresses with sleeves built in.
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW HARD THEY ARE TO FIND?
I think I own three dresses with built in sleeves. Two of them can pass for fancy. One of them gets passed around amongst my neighbors because it may be the only fancy black modest dress in existence.
Until now.
Enter brilliant women who like clothes.
They start a clothing line called Shabby Apple.
I’ve mentioned them before, and I may never shut up about them.
All their dresses COME WITH SLEEVES AND DECENT HEMLINES FOR GIRLS WITH CHUBBY KNEES.
And they’re pretty. OH, are they pretty.
Go ahead, look around, find your favorite. Tell me which one you love in a comment and you’ll be entered to win this one in your size:
Can you just imagine? With boots? With kicky heels? With shiny flats? I’m so in love with jewel tones I’m considering therapy.
They also have little girls’ dresses AND maternity dresses. *swoon*
Tweet this giveaway for an extra entry.
Comments will close at 8pm EST on Monday December 22nd.
Winner will be picked by random Monday night. (Anyone anywhere in the world can enter.)
You can also get 15% off any order by entering the code “mooshinindy15off” until February 1st.
I love making you love the stuff I love.

I would choose the Gypsy because it looks like the only one I wouldn’t have to wear an undershirt under. I wish they had more choices with long sleeves (over the elbow) and higher necklines (up to the collarbone). Believe me when I say I feel your pain. While I love these dresses and have purchased one of their toddler dresses in the past (it’s a fantastic dress) I’m a bit angry that these great dresses only go up to a 14-16. I’m a 16-18 with curves and would love a dress to cover my arms (which I hate no matter how many sets of weight lifting I do). If you are a curvy girl the only things out there are sleeveless with necklines that plunge to your bellybutton. Shabby Apple needs to expand their sizes!

The day I discover your blog, you have a giveaway!?
I think this was meant to be.
The gypsy dress is Ah-dorable, as is Martha’s Vineyard.
(Your blog is addictive and amazing, by the way.)

Slate. Definitely the Slate. It’s a magnificent clash of vintage periods! Which makes it timeless.
Although Five to Nine runs it a close second.
Where do you find this stuff?!

Oooooh. I’m just so happy about the coupon code that I did a little happy dance in front of my computer. I’m going to go buy myself a little Christmas right now! Thank you Thank you. And if by some miracle my number randomly comes up? I will know it is totally fate. That dress and me? Meant to be.

I love antiquated. I have your same problem. It would be nice to wear just a dress, no undershirt!

I actually like the cleopatra one—I’ve been considering switching to long-length skirts because of the fact it’s -20 in Canada. Knee length is pretty chilly.

I like the “Storm” one…simple and not too fancy. Fits my “basic and sort of sporty” preference in clothes. I don’t like to show off all of my goods either (thus, basic and sort of sporty) so most dresses that are out there are wayyyyyy too low-cut for my personal preferences. I hate sitting down and worrying about whether or not the girls are hanging out.

I want to dress my little girl up in the vineyard dress. The prego in me wants the virgin strawberry daiquairi. And the part of me that wished I had a perfect figure when I wasn’t prego wants the vanderbilt.
So Beautiful.

I was really prepared for these to be $200 dresses. $78 for the one I like (black one in apple shape — don’t remember the name), plus the 15% off? Merry Christmas to me!
Now if they would just make some with long sleeves…

I am also afflicted with chubby knees. My mother has a photo of me as a toddler and there is NO DIFFERENCE in the chubbiness from then to now. Except, actually, there is more of it because my knee is larger.

Um, are you kidding me? JUST ONE! I seriously wear dresses about 4 days of the week (more in the summer), so this is like asking me which one is my favorite child. Except I don’t have children… so, I guess it is more like asking me if I would like french fries or mashed potatoes.
Long way of saying- me want Marseilles.

I love love these dresses! Thanks for pointing me towards them. I too struggle with the modesty issue, plus I like to hide my mommy bulging areas. I couldn’t pick just one dress, so I will tell you the three I will most likely buy, A Sunday Afternoon, Antiquated, and the Nantucket.
