It's my 30th Birthday. (April 28th)

After a marvelous evening filled with friends, cupcakes and dancing…I feel more like myself and less like a slug.

I’m looking forward to thirty even though I still feel like I’m only 22.

It’s tradition around here that you wonderful people come out of hiding and make me a comment cake, telling me about the wonderful things going on in your life. Even if it’s just a nap or a really good sandwich last week. But if I may be a little selfish this year, since it’s kind of a big year, tell me something good, and then if you’ve been around for awhile (or just a little while), could you also tell me what your favorite post or photo of mine is?

I mean, I know what I like…but I’ve always been curious what you like, I’ve just been too bashful to ask.

I look forward to reading your lovely, it’s been a highlight of my birthday for the last five years.

  1. Happy birthday beautiful, beautiful friend! Love you to death and I hope you have the most amazing birthday ever!

I have so many favourite posts of yours. Whether it’s chubby baby photos, or telling your daughter how it’s cool to be a nerd (cause we nerd girls are awesome), or your posts about mental illness and infertility struggles that help me realise I am not alone, and that good days happen. Because they do!

Honestly right now one of my favourite posts of yours is the one where you said that you had come to a place of acceptance in your struggle with infertility. I love that post for two reasons. Because of the amazing surprise you got with Vivi (and the hope still left for me) but also because I believe I’m coming to a similar place of acceptance, and it’s good to know that it’s okay to have this place – because others have been there. YOU were there. And most days, you’re kinda one of my heroes chica.

<3 to you on your b-day.

    (thus ends Jia's rambling)

    Casey Reply:

@Untypically Jia, I’m so happy to be in the sisterhood of redheads with you.

  2. Happy day to you! :) Hope it is amazing!

The most wonderfulest thing is my little life right now is my shiny new baby. Who happens to be waking up right now, but it’s sort of okay because when you wait six years for a baby you feel okay about seeing her in the middle of the night!

Favorite post or photo of yours… your photos of your friend’s birth (I’m totally blanking on her name right now) were some of my most favorite and inspired me to have the courage to ask my mom and sisters to come to the birth of my baby and take photos. They’re not photographers so they’re not professional quality photos, but they represent one of the most precious days of my life. I don’t think I ever would have done that without seeing your photos. So, thanks! :) Not to mention – they’re really nice photos!

** I had to go back and find them. Here they are:

This post is another favorite, too, because of the last line…

    Casey Reply:

@Heidi, Oh my, I am so happy that you got your long awaited baby. It’s marvelous how quickly all the pain we went through melts away when we have them in our arms.

  3. Happy birthday!!! I’ve been a reader since you were pregnant with Vivi, but suck at commenting.
One of the most wonderful things going on in my life right now is watching my 5 year old daughter suddenly flourish with TONS of new knowledge. I mean I know kids are constantly learning new things and exploring but she has really suddenly taken off in the past 3 months with reading, comprehension and forming her own definte opinions on life. It’s like when she was an infant again and just watching her be in amazment of herself is soo wonderful. It’s hard to explain :)
You have so many wonderful pictures but some of my favorites are Vivi standing in front of the window in all her chubby leg cuteness, Emily’s birth photos (Stunning!) and Addie reading to Vivi being an awesome big sister.

    Casey Reply:

@Krystal, Five years old is magic, they become little citizens and best friends.

  4. HBD, gorgeous creature!
Good things – was chosen to be an editor of a writing challenge blog, my son’s superhero 3rd bday party and Cadbury mini eggs.
I have many favorite posts. How to Be Depressed, Parts 1 and 2.
Oh ye, of little milk supply
You are stronger than anything broken inside of you
    Brite wisdom for the littles
Hey you…with the happy face…what gives?
C’mon, you make magic in your posts and I love em all. Glad you got your happy pants dance on for your day.

    Casey Reply:

@Joules, Have you had the fudge Cadbury eggs? I’m a fan of the original, but those fudge ones man, YUM.

    Joules Reply:

@Casey, What are you doing to me? I am currently detoxing from the mini eggs and now I’m trolling the internet for the fudge eggs. Send insulin now.

  5. cheyenna says:

Happy birthday! I hope you have a wonderful year. I found your blog from babble’s baby’s first year and came to really enjoy your writing. This is my first time commenting, but I’ve been reading for quite awhile now. I also have a two daughters that are close in age to yours so I can relate to a lot of what you share. I tend to love all of your posts, so I don’t know if I can name a favorite! And I love all of the beautiful photos you share. I hope that I can pick up a few of your tips. I’ve been practicing.

    Casey Reply:

@cheyenna, Aww, hi and thanks for making the jump from babble…it can be a little terrifying over there. ;)

  6. Cristina says:

Happy Birthday! Anything you write about infertility really touches my heart and hits close to home.
On a happy note my son got into the charter school we were hoping for, so hooray!

    Casey Reply:

@Cristina, Congratulations to you and your son!

  7. Happy 30th birthday my dear friend of almost nine years! All your posts are my favorite. Love the pictures as well. They are all well-written, and I see a depiction behind every one of your photos.

After all…there is only one Casey in this world who is unique in her own!

Keep writing for those who need to hear you :)

    I love you!

    Casey Reply:

@Rose, Thank you my dear sweet Rose.

  8. You DO look like you are 22! And can I say all your photos are my favorite?

    Casey Reply:

@Adventures In Babywearing, Yes. Yes you can, because you’re my favorite.

    Adventures In Babywearing Reply:

    @Casey, Yay!

  9. Happy Birthday! Sorry it’s raining, but hope you have an awesome day anyway. I’m planning my son’s ninth birthday and looking forward to summer vacations. One of my favorite posts is the one about Addie coming home from Kindergarten in a police car, because really, how often does that happen – unique and laugh out loud funny. There is absolute beauty in all of your photos, but I’d say the ones I enjoy most are of Addie and Vivi together and your cute little Wink, and of course I treasure all of the moments you’ve captured of my family.

    Casey Reply:

@Wendy, It was raining? I didn’t notice. ;) Your boys are sunshine.

  10. Lisa in TX says:

I loved turning 30. I felt like I could finally just be me instead of trying to be what I thought others thought I should be. (Something like that.) I felt so much more comfortable in my own skin and quit caring about what people might think. It was so refreshing!

I am counting down the weeks on this baby–6 more to go! After my miscarriage, last year, I followed all of your pregnancy posts obsessively because I needed to know that *somebody’s* pregnancy was coming out right. Even with all the barfing and the splotchy face, I knew that if your baby came out OK, then I would be OK, too. Eventually.

    Casey Reply:

@Lisa in TX, SIX WEEKS TO BABY! You will be okay, and I hope the first year is just as magical for you as it was for me. Seriously, best year ever.

  11. Happy birthday, Casey! I’m three years behind you and so jealous of how youthful and wonderful you look. Happiness looks great on you, and I’m so glad to see it.

    Casey Reply:

@Erin, Oh thank you, drink lots of water, wash your face, use sunscreen…so far so good!

  12. Jackie in Ohio says:

Happy Birthday! I have been a very long time reader, but have never commented before. I can’t even remember how I found your blog, but I read it daily. Your writing, your photography, your children, I love them all.

I will be turning 30 in a few months too, and I’m starting to feel okay about it. I just recently made some HUGE life changes and I’m excited for my future.

My absolute favorite post of yours is from a few years ago. Eu falo Brazilian

You made me want to go try it and I did. :)

    Happy Birthday Casey!

    Casey Reply:

@Jackie in Ohio, Dude, the Brazilian. Heaven bless the Brazilian. I have made a lot of happy husbands, boyfriends and women through that post. ;)

  13. I didn’t realize I was older than you (by about 4.5 months). I don’t mean that in a bad way, I promise. :D

Honestly, I love all the pictures you take. I love the ones of Vivi. I have to show my husband and even he oohs and ahhs, and sometimes he wouldn’t even do it for our kids, so that’s saying something.

I love your unique perspective in your shots. You capture moments and shots that some wouldn’t think of taking and I love it.

You’re truly an inspiration to me, both with how you deal with your depression, the pictures you take, and the words you write.

    Sarah @ TM2TS Reply:

    @Sarah @ TM2TS, And I can’t believe I forgot to say this

    Casey Reply:

@Sarah @ TM2TS, Thank you Sarah, if you ever stop showing up in my Flickr stream I’ll know to send out the hounds. :)

  14. Happy birthday! My news this year is I have a new job that I LOVE. I am happier hen I have been is a long time. My little girl graduates high school in June and heads to college in August and I am bursting with pride. I hope you have an amazing birthday and a phenomenal year.

    Casey Reply:

@Erin, Oh, a new job that you like can change EVERYTHING. Hopefully your daughter isn’t going too far, girls need their moms.

  15. Happy Birthday!! May this year be the best one yet :).

Happy in my life. Sometimes it’s hard to find happy in the crazy. BUT I’m engaged to my high school sweetheart. It’s been seven years and about damn time, haha! So wedding planning is in full swing. Both my fiance and I are about to graduate (me from grad school, him from undergrad) and embark on our new lives together finding jobs, getting married, having kids (sooner rather than later, says I) so as stressful as all of that is, I do need to remember they are all good and wonderful things.

My favorite post. Gah, I love so many…it’s hard to pick. I think “breaking early to be strong later”..this one: Hit home for me, more than anything else. It was like you were talking about me. I can’t express to you how strong and brave you are for putting yourself and your emotions out there on the internet. It has helped so many people get through so much. Thank you. And happy birthday friend. (I can consider you a friend right? Not in a creepy way, just in a hey I’ve been there too kind of way.)

    Casey Reply:

@Brit, I had forgotten about that post! But yes, that one was dedicated to a very dear friend and every other mom in that heart wrenching situation.
Thank you, and yes. We’re totally friends, someday we’ll seal it with cupcakes.)

  16. Happiest Birthday Casey!!

I don’t know that I can choose a favorite. They are *all* favorites. Each picture, each post pokes at a soft spot in my heart that reminds me I’m not alone when sometimes my brain tells me I am.

My husband asked me a few seconds ago what I was doing. I told him…Wishing a friend in Indy “Happy Birthday”. He said you don’t have a friend in Indy..I said, Oh, but I do. That’s the great thing about the internet. We’ve never met but your posts and pictures let me know that I’m never alone. xoxo

    Casey Reply:

@Shelley, You tell your husband to get over here and let me kick him in the shin.
The Internet and our collective experiences make us all friends and sisters.

  17. Happy birthday Casey!

We’re in the midst of preparing for some big changes over here and while some days are overwhelming I have noticed a pattern. Just as I am starting to get discouraged I’ll get either a blessing that shocks me out of my frustrations or just a positive confirmation that I need to keep plugging along. It is that reminder that we have a reason for doing all this work even when we don’t really know what it is. I’m grateful to be able to recognize many small blessings each day.

I love the honest posts and that you keep it real. So the last few months as you’ve been so happy have been spectacular but the months when you were sick and preg were good too and the depression ones as well. Basically I’m in awe that you’re able to write through so many of the emotions. Total respect for ya woman! Have a great day.

    Casey Reply:

@Angela, Oh, thank you. Looks like you’re learning about grace and the blessings of little things in the face of hard stuff, noticing them makes all the difference.

    Angela Reply:

Check out Elder Bednar’s talk from the Ensign in March 2012. It was written just for me. And this kid in my ward. Oh and a friend says before it came out she attended a talk by him that was double the content of that ensign article and it was for her too. So I bet it will help you as well. So. Good.

    Casey Reply:

@Angela, Bednar is a close second to Ucthdorf these days.

  18. Happy birthday!

Lucas slept through the night the last TWO nights. It’s amazing. I’m a new person.

Happy to have met you in your 30th year. :)

    Casey Reply:

@Katie, It’s ridiculous to realize how much a solid night of sleep can change your entire outlook on life.

  19. Happy 30th birthday Casey! I’ve been reading your blog for probably 5 years! My life is good right now because I have an awesome husband, a beutiful little girl, and now we are trying for another one too! So exciting!
I’ve loved your blog, but I have to say, I think my favorite post was when you announced you were pregnant with Vivi. I was so happy for you!
I hope you have a great 30th! Here’s to another amazing decade!

    Casey Reply:

@Audie, Oh thank you, and good luck on the babymaking!

  20. Happy Birthday you wonderful woman!
My immediate thought was there is no better post than the orgasm on the treadmill.
But honestly, my favorite post is the one that made me fall in love with you. Blogher 08 you inspired me to come out of my shell and shine. I will always be grateful to you for that.

    Casey Reply:

@Adrienne, Meeting you in that hallway shortly before the police took us away, still one of the best moments of any BlogHer ever.

My favorite posts of yours are the ones (which is most of them, actually) that show your ridiculous, beautiful love for your girls. You are such an amazing and honest writer.

Good things for me this week: I’m going to have a nephew in September. !

    Casey Reply:

@Jen, DUDE WE SO NEED TO MEET EACH OTHER. You’re on my bucket blogger list. For reals.

  22. Happy Birthday, Casey! Here’s to hoping your day, month, year are blessed and bright. I love all of your writing, but especially love your posts about your family. You can tell that they are the center of your world and bring you so much joy! Praise God for that.

In our life? Hmmmm…we homeschool and our school year is almost done! :) Summer, anyone?

    Casey Reply:

@Amanda, NO SCHOOL!!! (The kid in me can totally get behind that.)

  23. I love the Internet and Twitter. Through them (I don’t even remember how) I found you. I love your blog. Your tweets make me laugh. Your photos make me pick up my camera more. Your writing through your struggles helps me understand myself a little better.

My favorite post or photo? I have to go with the photos but I can’t pick one. I love taking pictures. No ambitions of becoming a pro, but longing to learn how to take better pics. Looking at your pics inspires me to take more pics and learn more about photography.

What’s going on with me? I’m happy. That doesn’t seem like much to some people, but I know that you and your readers would understand. I’m happy with life. I’ve forged ahead in the world of being 30+ and it’s great. Dive in.

So dearest Casey, I wish you a very Happy Birthday!! I pray that this year is full of *HAPPY* for you!!

    Casey Reply:

@Heather, Happy is everything. Everything hinges on happy. I totally understand the happiness that happy can bring. xo

  24. Catherine says:

    Happy birthday Casey!

I’m so thankful for my son…he’ll be 9 months old tomorrow. I waited a long time for him…had him the day before I turned 43… He is the light of my life!

My favorite post… It’s a tie…the one when you revealed Addies name and the one you announced you were pregnant with Vivi. My heart was so happy for you after your long struggle!

    Casey Reply:

@Catherine, Oh! You got your baby! That makes me so happy. 9 months is fun, all if it is fun, but 9 months, very fun.

  25. Happy birthday to my most favorite person I’m not related to.

Is it vain of me to say my favorite posts have been the ones you wrote about me? The birth post of Paul, which is right in front of the one about Gage. And the same goes for photo.

The photos that you’ve taken of my kids throughout the years are gifts and treasures I’ll keep with me until my dying days.

You are an amazing friend, both to people “irl” and ones you touch through the keyboard.

Enjoy this day, 30 (and beyond) is pretty awesome.

    Casey Reply:

@designhermomma, Not vain at all, in fact I’d probably be offended if you didn’t pick those ones.
I’m so glad the Internet gave me you.

  26. dear casey,
here is my piece of the comment birthday cake.

first? HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 30′s are the best. People say it, but it’s true. It’s like you finally have permission to just be yourself. Although you have done a really great job of that already. You are an inspiration to me as a writer, a mother, and a fighter.

I can’t even tell you what my favorite of anything is, although the pics you took for Emily’s family when they found out they were having Paul are among my favorite. You have a special talent for capturing not just posed, happy pictures, but real, raw PEOPLE. The tears of joy, the look of wonder, the REAL emotions.

You have a pantload of talent my friend.

    My friend.

I am so lucky to call you that.

    Happiest of days to you.

    Casey Reply:

@Katie, Oh thank you. I’ve started to think of myself as more of a storyteller than a photographer so it makes me so happy that you see that.

  27. My happiness to share is a piano solo of “Love at Home” that I’m practicing for a Mother’s Day special number at church. Feeds my soul, music does. :)

The favorite post of yours that first came to mind was the write up you did of everything you had learned from nursing Vivi. Certainly helped me a ton!! I wouldn’t have known about the Lact-Aid, domperidone or the book “Making More Milk” without your post!

    Happy birthday, Casey!!

    Casey Reply:

@Candace, That was an epic post, if it helped one person (which apparently it did!) it was all worth it.
Good luck with your piano playing!

  28. Golly gee, getting out of debt has made this year pretty banner for us. :)

Favorite posts are honestly too many to number but always the gut wrenching honesty as well as the ridiculous pee your pants silly ones. Love the youtube bed commercial you made. and of course your beautiful photos. Probably those from Gage’s birth remain my favs. And anything with balloons. or that one I took of a troll looking at your boobs.

happy birthday dear. 30 is fantastic, trust me. :)

    Casey Reply:

@Cherie, I think you’d have a hard time topping last April!
    I adore you.

  29. Happy Birthday! I can’t believe how far you’ve come! (weird coming from a perfect stranger huh?)

I started reading your blog a few months ago shortly after finding out our countless attempts at TTC were finally successful and this blog is one of the best places I come from warm fuzzies of inspiration, refreshing YOUR page every day (both on here and babble) gives me new ideas of what amazing things I have to look forward to!

I’ve used the online time machine to go back to your original blog and watch its design evolve, watch you evolve and your posts evolve; its just SO MUCH FUN! Thanks for all the rays of sunshine and the refreshingly positive bits of parenthood (yes you make lice treatments sound like happy family moments!) Happy Birthday and here’s to many more years of posts about your family moments!

PS – and the stellar photography doesn’t hurt either :-)

    Casey Reply:

@Jaime, Not at all, I’ve grown and changed in so many ways over the last however many years and I’m so happy that it’s evident and perhaps inspiring others to keep going, thank you Jaime.

  30. Happy Birthday!

I love your blog and you are my favorite writer on Babble. I love that Cody writes now too. It is fun to hear how much he loves his family. is one of my favorite pictures. And your latest picture of Wink rubbing the wall. I love how the light plays off his fur.

I am enjoying every new day with my 15 month old. She’s starting to talk and her personality is really coming out. I feel she is similar to Vivi, who also seems full of joy.

Enjoy your 30th! Mine was great and every year since has been even better.

    Casey Reply:

@Alisa, Can you get over Cody’s lawyerly writing? We couldn’t be more different in our styles. :)
And OH THAT PICTURE. I love that picture too, one of my favorites for sure.
I feel bonded that we both have sunshine joy babies, they’re the best.

  31. Happy birthday! It looks like you’re starting your 30s off well. My wonderful thing is laughing with my kids. It just never gets old. My favorite post isn’t a post in it’s entirety but the one where you shared, “Everything turns out OK in the end. If it’s not OK, this is not the end.” I think about that often. However, I first found your blog through a link to your *ahem* treadmill post so that one stands out pretty clearly. I’m sure you’ll make 30 your best year yet!

    Casey Reply:

@Katie @ Heart Gone Walking, My best friend left me that quote YEARS ago and it has made such a difference to use it as my mantra.
And yes! The treadmill! WordPress deleted it at some point and I have NO IDEA how to get it back. :(

  32. I’m an absolute lurker and have been for a few years now. I’ve been vicariously following your challenging downs and your beautiful ups. My favorite posts are those where you find your inner strength but also recognize the support from those around you. I feel like I know your girls and Cody because of how you describe them as well as the fantastic images you share.

There are so many favorite photos it would be difficult for me to pick one. I love how you hone in on the essence of the subject, capturing energy, light and the sense of timelessness.

Something good right now from me – it’s been a tough week, personally – but I’m going to stay positive and relax my way through it.

    Casey Reply:

@Karla, I like your lurky tendencies.
I’m sending you all sorts of good jujus that this week gets better for you, I’ll be sobbing in a corner come Friday because that baby WILL BE ONE.

  33. Happy birthday to you! I love any photo of Vivi’s rolls….such a baby love :)

    Casey Reply:

@Hannah, I took more today, just for the baby roll lovers!

    Hannah Reply:

@Casey, That makes me oh so happy :) All of your words and your photos are a light in my day when I’m fighting that good fight against all those ucky feelings that you write so beautifully about

  34. Happy birthday! I love your photography, especially (of course) those chubby baby legs. To die for! Keep up the good work, especially what you do with light.

Right now I’m happy that after being laid off 3 months ago, I have a 2nd phone interview next week. It’s a step!

    Casey Reply:

I took more baby leg photos today just for the proclaimed chub lovers.

  35. Happy Birthday. I, too, will be turning 30 this year and can I say I actually am looking forward to it?

Anyway, the fun/wonderful thing going on in my life right now is planning a big bash to celebrate a few family milestones. Lots of out of town, and out of country, family are making plans to attend and I can’t wait to see them all.

I have been lurking since you were pregnant with Vivi and I was drawn to your blog becaus of your honesty and your photography. I love every photo you post and you inspire me to learn more about this fancy DSLR I’ve been trying to master for a few years now. Thank you.

    Casey Reply:

@Hannah, Family parties are so much fun. 30 is pretty sweet and keep on keeping on with that camera, it’s totally worth all the gross shots to get the ones you love.

  36. Happy birthday, Casey! I hope you enjoy your day.

Best news in my world: this week I found a different med combo to keep me going and smiling. I’m thankful the last serious bout of depression only lasted a few weeks.

My favorite posts are the ones about depression. I, too, struggle with difficult depression. Reading your posts gives me strength and encouragement – that I’ll make it through, or that I’m not the only one. I especially love the youtube video in the post “this is who you are” and “you are not.” The post by Cody about your depression was great, too; I don’t have a significant other, and I know everyone is different, but it was helpful to see depression through an outsider’s eyes – I always wonder what those around me think.

    Casey Reply:

@kellye, Oh! I love it when people are able to find a med combo that lets them feel human and enjoy life, I so totally get how important that is.
    Thanks for the birthday wishes!

  37. Happy Birthday! What a great day for a birthday (its mine too :)) Hope you have a wonderful day. My favorite posts are the ones where you show your girls interacting together. Nothing quite like a sister :) Happy Birthday to you again!

    Casey Reply:

@CJ, It’s kind of the best day for a birthday ever right? Hope yours was just as wonderful!

  38. Biggest happy 3-0 to you! I’m there in less than a year and am glad to hear it’s a happy place :)
In a time of great stress in my house, my gorgeous little Asher is keeping me sane as her amazing personality shines out more and more everyday. She’s about 2 minutes away from walking and running everywhere. Hence, my favourite posts of yours are the ones about your girls, especially the ones about Vivi with Addie. I’m getting clucky again, and seeing their beautiful relationship in the beautiful photos that you take melts my heart everytime <3

    Casey Reply:

@Andrea, Sisters are a wonderful thing, and 30 is turning out to be pretty good.

  39. Happy Birthday my friend.

Wishing a day filled with love and happiness that you deserve.

May you absorb all the love around you…hold it within you…savor it…capture it…and save it for those times when the darkness seems overwhelming. If and when THAT day comes, reach inside and wrap your arms around that love from others…remembering how wonderful you are…how perfectly created…and smile.

    Casey Reply:

@lisa, you forgot “wear my earrings daily and feel prettier doing it”
    Because it’s totally true.

  40. My favorite posts by you are always where you are real with us, no matter what the topic.

The most wonderful part of my life right now is that I am taking my med-surg nursing final on Monday and then no more med-surg class EVER again. :)

    Casey Reply:

@Becca, I’m outrageously happy for you and I don’t even know what kind of nursing final that is but it sounds hard and stressful and IT WILL ALL BE OVER SOON!

  41. COMMENT CAKE TIME!! I love it! My happy thing is that I am a middle school teacher and we have 18 more days of school till summer break. AWWW YEAH. My favorite post? I have too many favorite posts to list all but one of the top 10 is your pregnancy announcement with Vivi. I love the part about ” Not out of the woods yet, but taking your hand and bringing you in the woods with me”. What a perfect description of a valuable friendship. Happy birthday, friend-I-Haven’t-Met-Yet!!

    Casey Reply:

@Melissa, You’ve been around for a lot of them!
Bless you for being a middle school teacher. BLESS YOU. Those kids are trouble. (Or at least I was.)

  42. I have been reading about 3 years I think. I cannot think of 1 favorite post but perhaps Vivi’s crazy hair post?

As for something good I have not yet hacked up a lung and with the amount I am coughing right now that is very good. Ha!

    Casey Reply:

@kim q, Hacking coughs are the worst, they make you find muscles in your body you never knew you had.
    Thanks for the birthday wishes!

  43. Brittany says:

    Happy Birthday to you!
My favorite post is definitely “you are not.” Although, any of your photography posts would be a close second. Your passion is so evident, and the way you explain / teach / show – I get it, and I learn from it.
I’m not a mom [yet], but I know that your girls are so lucky to have you as their mom! I love reading the posts about them, and picking up tips for the future. (:
There are so many posts that I could mention, really. You inspire me to be a better person, and to fight through the darkness.
I hope all your good comes back to you, tenfold.

@Brittany, Oh my heavens, you are wonderful, thank you for this. xo

  44. Happy Birthday!

My favorite post from you is the one about infertility affecting friendships. Holy smokes, you hit it right on the head. Good, good post.

And something good going on in my life? The sun is shining, the weather is warming, and my sweet daughter is finally starting to string together sentences. We have communication! It’s brilliant.

@Shannon, I wrote that one the DAY BEFORE I found out I was pregnant, how’s that for irony?
Here’s to life getting a lot more talkative for you!

  45. Happy birthday Casey!

My favorite posts of yours are the brutally honest ones of your struggles with depression- the ones that aren’t popular issues but that are real, the ones so many of us nod and say, “me too” but are too scared to know where to go other than into a deep dark hole.

Favorite pictures: Oh baby pictures! Chubby little knees and fingers and elbows….you get the idea…all those cute baby parts I want to virtually kiss. :)

Something good in my world: We have a puppy, a precious puppy who smothers me in kisses and love. After losing our 10 year old dog to leukemia 2 months ago, and being someone without kids, having this puppy is my reason for getting out of bed in the morning- and she knows it. :)

@Chris, I can only imagine that puppies heal broken hearts the same way Vivi healed mine. :)
(I also want a puppy picture. Stat.)

@Casey, So sweet to reply Casey. And a picture will be in your inbox. Not beautiful like your pictures, but I’m taking about a million of them, because a baby of any kind motivates me to take pictures. And yes, puppies heal broken hearts too, it’s all that unconditional baby love– they’re just furry babies, and I’m a sucker for a baby of any species. love is love.

  46. Happy birthday!

I finished my first half marathon today! So that’s my happy news.

I love any pictures you do with balloons – so fun. I love your funny posts, because they make me laugh. Mostly though I think my favorite posts were the one where you told us Addie’s name and the picture you posted when you were headed to the hospital to have Vivi.

You should come through Louisville sometime soon so I can meet you.

    Happy happy birthday!

    Casey Reply:

@Kim, You finished a half marathon and you can still form coherent thoughts? CONGRATULATIONS!
We’re planning a trip to Louisville soon!

  47. Happy Birthday, my friend! I’m glad I stumbled on your writing a few years ago. You are a spectacular person. Whenever you lose sight of that, I want to remind you over and over. :)
My favorite happy from the last year was the first real vacation Hadley and I took. North Carolina and the ocean really soothe my soul.
Naming a favorite is like saying which parent, child, or pet is the favorite. It’s impossible. The one that came to mind, though, was the one you wrote when you were traveling and heard the person in the next room crying.
I’m glad you had a wonderful day.

@Mary, I’m so happy you trusted me to take your photos. NOW LET’S DO IT AGAIN!

  48. Today I started my training for the 3Day Breast Cancer walk I’ll do in Chicago this summer. That’s my lovely.

Your lovely (for me) are the photos of your girls together. I have that in my house but I never see it the way your photos show it. The bond, the admiration, the profound love… I wish so often I could capture it. It’s a summer hopeful to-do!

    Jamie Reply:

@Jamie, Oh AND Happy 30 – I loved 30 and even the couple of years that have come after it!

    Casey Reply:

@Jamie, Thank you! I totally stage the photos and bribe them with candy to make them look like they like each other. (I kid, a little bit.) Good luck with your big walk!

    Happy Birthday!
I’ve been reading for a couple of years – you’re one of the “stranger” blogs that I actually have kept reading because I love what and how you write.
I can’t pick a favourite…I enjoy ALL of your photos. (and posts.)
Thanks for being as honest as you can be. Makes us all feel the way we feel is ok@

@Kristin S, I’m glad you put “stranger” in quotes. Heh.

Happy, Happy Birthday! What a beautiful picture to bring in your 30′s! My best friend and I both turn 30 in the next two weeks and I hope to have that much enthusiasm.
My lovely is that right now both of my sweet children are passed out on my sides (only 2 hours after bedtime) after a beautiful, play-filled day.
I enjoy every picture and post you write and am so thankful that I clicked on your link from another blog I follow (Late Enough). Your post, The One About a Broken Heart, was so beautifully written and while I desperately wish I didn’t know that sound as well, it brought comfort to read your words and feel less alone.
I hope 30 is your best yet!

    Casey Reply:

@Sarah King, In full disclosure, it was so windy I couldn’t feel my fingers in the photo because the strings were digging in so hard.
    I feel better admitting that.
Thank you for the birthday wishes and happy birthday to you in May!
