Our cats joined us six months after Vivi joined us, which means they came into a home where there was no real risk of being attacked by a baby unless being shrieked at could be considered an attack. We never intended to rescue two cats, but when I went in to visit the one eyed cat I had my heart set on, I turned around to find a brown tabby curled up in Vivi’s lap as she sat in her stroller. He purred as Vivi grabbed at his fur and tugged on his whiskers.

Later we started to wonder if all the other cats at the Humane Society were rolling their eyes at him “There goes that stupid cat again, putting on a show for the humans.

Well cats, we fell for it because when we came back the next day to pick up our one eyed cat, Cody took one look at the brown tabby and said “He’s coming too.

Percy walked into our house and said “I LIKE IT!” and made himself right at home (on my face.) Wink on the other hand took to hiding under our bed, but it was cool. I dig cats who demand you win their love, which is probably why I’m more of a cat person, dogs give it up too easily.

Both the cats have always been accepting of Vivi’s existence. Percy constantly tries to rub up on her, I can only assume it’s because she’s warm, smells like milk and her chubby little fingers can really dig into all of his itchy parts.

Wink loves her from a distance, he waits until she’s busy then sneaks up behind her to make sure she’s okay.

He never moves too fast around her and when she’s crying he stands guard until she’s settled down.

Various cat parts have become standard issue in many of our family photos.

cats. sheesh.

Vivi and Percy

These cats make us all outrageously happy despite the baby playing in the kitty water and the fact that owning cats makes the 5 second rule null and void.

Someday this baby is going to grow up and leave me.

Someday these cats are going to leave all of us.

Better enjoy it while I can, because I wouldn’t trade any of them for anything.

  1. I love a lot of stuff about your blog, but I especially love your cat posts. You’re good people for taking in two adult kitties.

    Casey Reply:

@Emilie, You spell your name like my sister!
Thank you, I have always wanted to rescue an older kitty and let them live out their days in my sunny patches, it could easily become an obsession.

  2. This makes me miss having a cat SO badly, but 1000 sq feet, 2 kids, and NO place for a little box makes it not a very happy place for a cat. I’d be happy as a clam, but the cat(s) would be miserable.

I live vicariously through your blog posts/pictures with the cats, as everyone else around me who has cats has cats that seem to hate the camera :(

    Casey Reply:

@Sarah @ TM2TS, I had to live for five years without cats and I LONGED for them.
I think my cats know they owe it to me to look pretty when my camera is out.

    Sarah @ TM2TS Reply:

    @Casey, it’s been 7 years this year :(

I’m thankful, honestly, that your cats are so “accepting” of being photographed :D

    Casey Reply:

    @Sarah @ TM2TS, More cats for Sarah!

  3. That LOL cat you made is hilarious. I definitely LOL’d (har de har). How do we get that thing viral? You have a future as a LOL cat creator.
    *Fist Bump*

    Casey Reply:

@Lia, I did a whole series of them and apologized to the Internet for all of them, I didn’t have a cat when LOLcats were big! I had to make up for lost time!

  4. Okay, don’t hate me, but I’m not the biggest fan of cats. Except yours are adorable. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Vivi is in the photos too :-)

    Casey Reply:

@Marta, It’s cool, as long as you’re nice to mine (and others) you can not like them all you want.

  5. Rebecca says:

Ugh- I love this post, but it’s bittersweet for me. I had my cat from the age of 6 until 22. I can’t even get into the kind of hurt I felt when she had to be put down due to cancer. Let’s just say Marley and Me had me curled in the fetal position bawling just from the memories.
I wouldn’t have changed a single moment of all of those years with her though. Isn’t it amazing how they become so much more then just ‘pets’, but FAMILY?
    <3 Enjoy every moment!

    Casey Reply:

@Rebecca, Oh man, it kills me knowing that both girls are going to remember these cats and their hearts are going to be broken when we lose them.
    NEW SUBJECT!

  6. Does the Disney Baby business mean that you won’t post on this website anymore?

    Casey Reply:

@Jenny, Oh no no no, it just means I’ll be writing over there full time, rather than doing sponsored posts for them on my own blog. These are just supposed to be teasers of what Disney Baby will hopefully be like.

  7. Hi! I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and LOVE it, but this is the first time I’m commenting. I love the pics of the kitties and miss Vivi. :) So much cuteness all at once! I have a question for you of the technical variety though. I love taking pics of my little boy, but just can’t get them to come out the way I’d like. I’m thinking it might be the lens I have. I am using a Nikon D40 (I know you use Canon, but hopefully this won’t affect the answer) and right now only have my kit lens. What would you suggest for my first big “lens purchase” if I primarily take pics of my son, friends, family, etc.? Basically, what is your “go to” lens to get the pics that you do?

    Casey Reply:

@Carla, 50mm f/1.4 Did you ever see my epic post about buying cameras and lenses?

    Carla Reply:

Thanks so much! I was thinking the 50mm is what I needed to go for, but your answer definitely helped me clarify that decision! I also read over the camera and lens post again and know I’ll be referring back to it multiple times as I hone my photography skills. I really appreciate the help! :)

  8. You have totally captured the love! We got two kitties 12 years ago and one died last December. Both had always been tolerant but distant with the baby. My husband surprised me with a rescue kitten two weeks ago. She is so sweet and is quickly becoming the baby’s best friend. I had no idea kittens and toddlers could get along so well!

  9. Yeah… I am definitely a cat person. Although I would have to get on a better cleaning schedule because after NOT living with pets for 10 years now when I go to my parents or my in-laws houses with cats and dogs all the fur everywhere drives me batty!
I grew up with always a cat though and they are the best!
