Earlier in the summer when the temperatures started creeping into the 90’s my air contioning went fritzy.

“Mrs. moosh, it looks like your A/C fixed with parts and labor will be $1,300.”

I didn’t think it through, I didn’t even consider getting a second opinion. Had it been something like brakes? Eh, negotiable. But A/C?

Fix it and fix it now.

That brings me to my camera.

It had been acting a little fritzy itself and I took it into a camera store just to make sure it wasn’t me.

“Mrs. moosh, your camera doesn’t focus. It needs to be fixed.”

“Focus? Pshaw. It still kind of works, right? I can make do…I don’t want to part with it.”

“Mrs. moosh? You’re an idiot, your camera doesn’t focus. Not a negotiable feature.”

“Fine. Fix it and fix it now.”

Then I learned that “fix it and fix it now” doesn’t apply to SLR cameras. It’s more like “we’ll fix it eventually and it should be back in 4 to 6 weeks.”

I’m twitching without it. My right index finger is growing weak and becoming depressed from shutter withdrawl.

Colors are brighter and magical fairies riding tiny little unicorns appear in flowery meadows on a daily basis, only you’re going to have to just believe me because I don’t have a camera to prove it. A photographer was even the Higglytown Hero today.

The Disney Channel is mocking my pain.

I realize I live a blessed life, and that my camera is just a thing (I’m sorry camera, I don’t mean it! I LOVE YOU!) But there are just a few comforts and luxuries I don’t love going without in life.

A/C and my Camera.

  1. I’m fighting with my daughter about getting her a new pair of school shoes (come on, Emme, can’t you curl your toes a little?), but bought myself a new printer b/c the old one broke and I NEED a printer!

  2. My computer is one of those silly things I can’t live without. As for non physical things coaching sports (not to just win but more to have fun and see the interaction between the kids as they become friends) and seeing my boys grow up! Fresh corn and strawberry’s in the summertime! The autumn leafs and the dead silence on a snowy winter evening. Just a few things that I can’t live without…

  3. My luxuries are internet (specifically facebook and blogging) and iced coffee.

  4. I needs my Ipod and my cell phone. I think if either were to go down my heart would stop….permanently. I just can’t fathom a life without them.

  5. Definitely, hands down, without a doubt the Internet. I have no qualms whole-heartedly admitting that I am an Internet Addict.

Also dairy products. Milk, cream, cheese, cream cheese, ice cream. Dairy, dairy, dairy! (Does that count as an object?)

Sherrys last blog post..Sherry Had a Little Lamb…

  6. Definitely my A/C. And my hand-stuffed, hand-stitched feather pillow. Nothing compares to that pillow! And right now, peaches. I can’t do without at least one fresh peach a day.

  7. My cell phone. (not a blackberry or an iphone either)

um, and a fan. I can’t sleep without the soothing humming of a fan in the room.

  8. My camera had the same problem recently. Luckily we had a service plan, but they said 2-6 WEEKS and I almost exploded. It ended up being about 2 weeks, but I didn’t like not having it around.

  9. i have been wanting a new camera for awhile now. i couldn’t really justify it, because we didn’t have the money and the old one worked fine. while in france this past week i took lots of pictures with the old thing. once i got home i started to notice that many of them had a smudge in the center. there was a fingerprint or something on the camera. my husband borrowed it about halfway through the week so i blame him. while using the camera he changed the battery and actually broke the little door that holds the battery in. now it has to be taped shut. NOW i can justify getting a new camera. YEA!!!!

  10. Ug, I am DYING for you. My mostest favoritest lens has been on the FRITZ for a YEAR…I am making it due…I must MUST must MUST send it away this December to be fixed. I just might die. I feel your pain. You are my hero…you will survive.

  11. A/C is probably #1 on my list. I’m not as concerned about my camera because I have 2 SLRs (one D, one film) so even if something went horribly wrong I’d still be OK.

But, when they told you the camera “doesn’t focus”, did they mean the AF (autofocus) wasn’t working? Because if not, then focusing isn’t a function of the camera, it’s a function of the lens. And technically, you can focus without AF. (Just saying, if you want to try and get it back and delay the repair until after fall.)

Arrr. You and the Moosh can git yer scurvy tails up in the yards, and spread yer sails. If yer good, ye can git yer grog after ya eats yer chow.

  13. My navigation system (dear, sweet Nav) and my dishwasher. I put almost EVERYTHING in my dishwasher — no dish pan hands here!

  14. my macbook hard drive died last week. it was a sad sad day and still is…. no os/x dics to be found so waiting for Apple to come to my rescue.

can you say HYPERVENTILATION?! I can.

  15. I nearly always get my car fixed right. away. I know a lot of people drive with little issues or little dings in their cars, but it drives me insane (so long as I have the money). Of course, the check engine light has been on for a month now, and I got a ding in the roof on Sunday from the WIND STORM OF 2008!!!, but I am slowly hesitating, since it’s nearly paid off. (YEAH!)

  16. Hi there! I got my first SLR camera earlier this year. It has literally become an extension of me. I shudder to think of the day when it will have to in for “servicing”.

  17. oh for SURE. My car A/C broke back in June and it was $1200 to fix, and I didn’t bat an eye. I need my A/C. I used poor Maggie in the backseat sweating in her carseat and getting blown to bits with the windows down for a week as my excuse, but really? I’m a wimp in the heat.

And if I had to go without a camera- any camera- for even a day, I JUST KNOW there would be the most awesome photo-ops ever and I would miss them and ARGH I would be so freaking mad. I hope it goes quickly and you get your ‘other baby’ back soon πŸ˜‰

  22. I tend to freak out whenever I’m without internet or my iMac.

Also can’t live without my toddler twins, and the occasional breaks I get from said twins.

  23. That would be my phone. And the DVD player in the car.

I’ve got a post up today – anyone with daughters should read it!

  24. Umm…I have only one thing on my mind and I almost started crying (not really) when I read this…MY BLOG. Its having some trouble getting switched over to the new host. I can’t see it or my dashboard or my cpanel stats. Nothing. And it didn’t even tell me first before going off to lala land. I NEED it back soon. My family is so tired of hearing about it and its all I twitter about and write on others blogs too. Its been a week and I am dying. I will send you my camera until yours is done (DSLR too) if you can convince my blog to work again. πŸ™‚

  25. Ugh. I got so mad about the repair situation for my old camera I bought a new one. That one died (ok, I’m hard on cameras) and my husband replaced it within days.

    I understand.

  26. My MAC computer…definitely. It’s like my lifeline. It’s sick. Really sick.
PS: Doing a hair-related contest on my blog…check it out because Moosh’s hair deserves the spotlight!

  27. I would rather buy a new laptop than wait 4-6 weeks for this one to get fixed.

  28. I use my computer every day, so you’d think I’d say that I can’t live without it — but honestly, I’m quite happy to live without it while on a vacation or something. 4-6 weeks, however, would be a disaster of epic proportions. I think the things I need are my water heater (must. have. hot. shower.) and coffee maker.

  29. No AC? And I thought my swamp cooler was bad! It just stops working once it reaches like 90 degrees outside. But at least we have dry heat here! I would have been the same way, but DANG was that expensive!

I’m waiting for my camera to break so my husband is forced to buy me a new one! A good one for crying out loud! Sorry about yours!

  31. what kind of camera do you use? (hi, i’m megan:) and i think you take really great pictures!) i have become fascinated with photography, but have no idea where to begin when it comes to SLR’s. they seem to range in price from 600 – 3,000.. your thoughts?

  32. heh. I was going to say the internet, but then I went ALL weekend without it. I even used one of those giant yellow book thingies to find a restaurant. It was crazy. Although, I did still consult my laptop when I was without webbage, so maybe I’ll say that. πŸ™‚

  35. A Mac operating system. (I used to work for Apple, so the bias is strong.) If for some reason I am without my beautiful MacBook and I need to use a computer, I will wait however long is necessary in the lab for a Mac rather than touch a PC with a ten foot pole. Elitist? Whatever. I live in Manhattan. Being elitist is a pre-rec.

Secondly, I use a particular brand of henna on my hair that I can’t find in any store in NY, (madness!) so I order it in bulk from the interwebs.

Thirdly, I live with a British person, and now I can’t function without the electric kettle. It boils water in like, twenty seconds. Brilliant! We should have more of them in America.

  36. I SO HEAR YOU. My camera needs cleaning desperately but they’re telling me they have to send it away and it’ll take a month. A MONTH. I die inside at the thought. Which is why I haven’t done it yet. But now it’s a month before Halloween and I figure I really should do it. (And I want to get a little backup camera, but I know that after a dslr I’ll probably go insane dealing with a pointandshoot. Ah, the problems of my life. Maybe I just prefer to focus on the (gulp) less important ones (you’re so awesome, I feel exactly the same: I’m sorry baby, I didn’t mean it, you know I love you!!).)
