Growing up: Lawyers and doctors are rich!

Pre-Law School: (stars in my eyes) In three years my husband is going to be smart and rich!

Second year of law school: Huh, well this has to be worth it eventually right?

Four months away from graduation from Law School: Meh.

I admit to being just as disillusioned about law school and the prospects of my husband being an attorney as some people are about marriage being a romantic fun ride of never ending happiness. (P.S. If you’re new here, I don’t love newlyweds. They induce my gag reflex hardcore.)

Here we are, four months away from graduation and while three years ago I thought I’d be picking between a Cadillac or a Lexus, at this point I’m left deciding between Ramen or Mac & Cheese for dinner.

I don’t regret Cody going to law school. He enjoys it and he’s damn good at it.

We’re still married. We still like each other. We’re actually never around each other enough to get sick of each other.

My illusions about a rich lawyer husband are smashed.

We have so much else to look forward to besides fast cars and diamond shoes. Like massive graduate school debt and a whole lifetime (well, 30 years) to pay it off. See that? How I made that a glass half full thing?

Law school has really helped my cynicism.

So hit me, let’s be optimistic about those pessimistic things in our lives.

Let me give you another example,

Cody’s gone at school all the time, but I never have to share the TV.

Your turn.

  1. Yeah, that’s why I stopped practicing law.
    Um, I’ve got nothing.

  2. My husband just finished 4 years of med school and 3 years of a medical residency and I still can’t afford a home that fits my family (I had your vision too). But we finally can replace our 1987 4-Runner with a vehicle that has 4 doors (no more putting kids in and out through the window). And with the economy tanking our $170,000 in student loans is getting a better interest rate! Woo Hoo!

  3. oh, yes. My in-laws seem to have similar ideas about medical school as you-three-years-ago did. It is freaking hard work, and I’m SURE my husband has spent a lot of time wondering whether it’s worth putting up with Grumpy Wife two thirds of the time. But you’re right – if it’s what you love, it’s what you love. Your husband is lucky to have you. I tell myself that maybe I can watch TV again someday..

  4. I havent done law but I did my MBA with a full time job. Initially it was tough but as MBA is more job oriented and practical subject so it helped a lot in my work as well.

  5. um… hmm…

Being infertile has meant I have gotten to see actual photos of my insides, which I think is immensely exciting. It has also introduced me to the joys of high deductible policies in conjunction with hsa accounts. I don’t mean that sarcastically. They are WAY less expensive for us, and the HSA money can roll over from year to year, making it much less stressful.

  7. This veil of flub keeps me warm. And I am semi-grateful for it.

    OK, not really.

  8. Oooh! I have a new one!

My dad just found out he has a large cancerous tumor on his pancreas and probably 3-6 months to live.

But at least now I get to quit my sucky job to move back to the midwest to take care of him!

  9. My sister is a lawyer, my best friend is a district Attorney. They’re doing pretty good, but honestly we make more money than them. They have a lot of debt to pay off and it’s stressful work. If your husband went into it because he wanted to be rich it was the wrong reason. Do what you love and you’ll be happy. Sure you’ll have more money eventually but is it worth it? Sadly it’s going to take you both working to buy those diamond studded shoes, life’s expensive!

But you could look at in a postive manner, you miss him because he’s gone all the time. Missing you sex is good sex always.

  10. I have one: My aunt just found out she has just weeks to live. On the upside, my brother and I are FINALLY making that long overdue visit to see all our family in the midwest. 8 years overdue.
Or how about this one. You may appreciate it.
We’re not sure we will ever have another child…but at least we’ll be able to afford swinging vacations with our small family.

  11. My husband works all the time as an auctioneer, but I get to stay home with my daughter and attempt to write a novel.

Also, I hate newlyweds. The worst are the sort that try to give out marriage advice two days, two weeks, two months or even two years into it.

  12. Isn’t that the truth?
    I love it.

  13. Law School = Highly Overrated. My husband loved his law school experience. Me, it was more like the dentist drilling my teeth without the drugs every day. So we quickly decided that only one of us practices the stuff for a living, and I think that was an excellent decision for the success of our marriage. I love my brilliant lawyer! As for a rich lawyer…maybe when their 70 years old. So prepare thyself to pay thy bills now!

  14. I loved reading this post. I, too, believed law school would be different than it actually is. My husband graduated last May, passed the bar in October and barely got a statie prosecutor position barely making enough to keep us off state benefits. It’s a bad time to be a lawyer. Good luck to you and your husband. By the way, I’m a fellow church member, who after reading your conversion story, felt strangely like it was my own. I married a Mormon then became one myself. Weird. Anyway, it’s good to know church members are everywhere. We’re actually in the same stake. Indy? Right? We just moved around here so we’re still figuring out all the demographics. Have a good one.
