If you’ve been around for awhile, you’ll know I favor the left side of my face.

I wish the right matched the left. (Not a phone photo. Sorry. Liar liar.)

But what’s wrong with the right side Casey?

Oh, you know, a lot. First of all, there’s the rash.

petichiae update. 16 weeks.

Then there’s my eyebrow, it’s just a little bit shorter on the right side and it has a bald spot.

My right eye closes more than my left when I smile, I mean, it’s really just a lazier eye overall.

My undereye on the right side is also a little darker and a lot puffier than the left.

My hair is thinner on the left compared to the right.

I’m not sure why my right side has to be so difficult.

I mean, as humans, we came from an egg and sperm, to expect us to be perfectly symmetrical is downright stupid. (However some people are perfectly symmetrical and symmetry is the scientific definition of beauty.)

For a long time I’ve wanted to do a mirror image of my face, out of curiosity. (And to prove to I really do have a better side, that it’s not just in my head.)

Original photo I worked from?

Not bad, not bad. But lefty is clearly working the smize while righty is just…there. So out of curiosity, what if we mirrored the smize?

I present…double lefty.

The eyebrows! THE HAIR! WHOO! I mean, sure it’s a little silly looking because it’s double my face but you have to admit, the left side is certainly not my worst side.

Speaking of worst side, DOUBLE THE RIGHT PHOTOSHOP!

WEIRD RIGHT? So weird. Clearly my right eye is farther out than my left eye but it’s not something anyone would ever just notice. The eyebrow is is short and balding and the rash. THE RASH!

I still love you right side of my face! You chew and smile and blink and all that other stuff a face is supposed to do, but when it comes to my good side? We clearly have a winner and it isn’t you. BUT THAT’S OKAY! Because apparently people with symmetrical faces tend to be more selfish, we don’t ever want to be selfish, even if it is at the expense of a very beautiful face.

So give it up, do you have a good side? I think I’ve just proven that good sides are totally a thing if you’ve been skeptical to admit it.

  1. I don’t know if I have a good side of my face, but I do have an eye that is squintier than the other (my left) and my right side has a huge scar on my cheek and a bald spot at the end of my eyebrow (also from a scar). But my left side has the worse rosacea. So now I’m curious! I want to see a mirror of my face!

    Casey Reply:

@Katie, I’ve been staring at your face A LOT for the last couple months and it’s super pretty. I haven’t seen any scars if that says something. (And seriously, looking at your face A LOT.)
(I’ll also see if I have a straight on one I can mirror if you want.)

  2. I don’t know if I have a good side either. I usually have one side that has a major zit break-out (I thought by 30, that should be done? Nope, I’m more broke out than a 13-year-old boy sometimes :O) but I think it’s pretty close to symmetrical. At least to my naked, untrained eyes.

I saw that first “symmetrical” picture of you and went, out-loud “That’s not Casey”. Neither looks like you. I like both sides of your face. You’re beautiful 😀

    Casey Reply:

@Sarah @ TM2TS, Oh thank you, my right side is always the side that breaks out more too. STUPID RIGHT SIDE. I mean, at least the weirdness is contained to one side?

  3. I do have to say that your head is tilted ever-so-slightly to the right, thus ruining the experiment. You must change your hypothesis and start all over again!!

    Casey Reply:

@Shimmy, It’s still going to be funny looking. But I accept the challenge!

  4. So everyone actually has a masculine and feminine side to their face. If you cover half of your face in a photo, you can totally tell. Your photos clearly show your left side is feminine and the right is masculine. Interesting tidbit that has helped me as a photographer.

    Casey Reply:

@Amber, I did it to Cody and he has a masculine side and a nerdy side.

  5. I never even know if I have a good side. I think it MAY be my right side (so technically left to other people), but I don’t even know. Which is weird considering how much I study myself in photo. Often.

    Casey Reply:

@ClassyFabSarah, Apparently I’m just going to have to take your picture to find out.

  6. I do, and I think it’s my right side. There’s something about my face that’s definitely lopsided; one eye is higher than the other and I think one side is broader than the other. I haven’t even bothered to try this because it would require me to actually sit in front of a camera (yuck). My husband thinks I have low self-esteem. I’m like “don’t you see it on my ID photo?! It’s SO OBVIOUS!” Heh.

Your left side “symmetrical” face reminded me of Kim from Real Housewives of Atlanta, who I generally find to be quite unattractive. Her hair and personality probably has something to do with that. The right side reminds me of Christina Ricci o_o

    Casey Reply:

@Pennie, Well, I mean, there’s low self esteem then there’s the simple fact that most faces are not symmetrical.

  7. This was a weird/neat/interesting experiment! I have a preferred side, my left, and it’s because my dimple is on the left side. And my right eye is wonky. Or at least I think it’s my right eye that’s the wonky one. But yes, I prefer my left side.

    Casey Reply:

@Miranda (Not Super…Just Mom), I think most right sides are the trouble makers!

  8. I am laughing so hard because only you could think of this.

I don’t know. I think I favor my left side as well, although my left eye is the one that squints down the furthest when I smile.

    Casey Reply:

@Beth Anne, I have to distract myself with something while Cody is watching The Walking Dead.

  9. Well I’ll be a daggone monkey’s uncle. That was incredible.

I also prefer my left side. First of all, because my teeth are askew on the right side, and then also for a reason I can’t seem to pinpoint.

    Casey Reply:

@Nadja, Because rights are usually wrongs when it comes to faces (or so I’m finding out.)
(I mean, not that the right side of your face is *wrong* I’m just going with a pun theme here.)

  10. You are really very pretty. I don’t know which side of my face I like better, but I’m going to figure that out this week. Challenge Accepted.

    Casey Reply:

    @angi, REPORT BACK.
(and thank you, any pretty I possess is really because I am happy and well loved.)

  11. I’m curious about your tattoos! Have you ever posted anything about how many you have or what they mean, etc? Thanks – I’ve been a LONG time reader and LOVE your blog! Cheers!

    Casey Reply:

@Cate, I haven’t, it’s one I’ve been considering for awhile but they are very special to me so they’re hard to explain.
Easiest way, did you ever see Ghost with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze? You know how they say “Ditto” to each other? That phrase is our ditto.

  12. I actually have a flickr set for my left side of my face. It’s the nicer one. Sometimes (right now, it’s tremendously hormonally afflicted.)

    Casey Reply:

@Sarah, You and I have so much in common. Lefty kiss kiss.

  13. I have totally done this too! But I got discouraged making it a “clean” photoshop job so I gave up halfway through.

It’s so weird isn’t it that we aren’t symmetrical? I guess it’s what makes us uniquely flawed.

To be honest, I like your regular picture better! It’s just a little darker which gives double lefty an unfair advantage.

    Casey Reply:

@Laura, That’s what Shireen said, the shadows made it look more dramatic. Pfft, it’s silly looking shadow, head tilt or not but my right side thanks you for your vote of confidence!

  14. This totally blows me away. And my husband. I showed it to him too. Makes me want to try it with myself. But I’m not particularly fond of either side, although I may find that I am now… 😉

    Casey Reply:

@Elaine A., Hey, if nothing else you get a your best side out of the deal!

  15. My left side is my better side too. It’s the side I like to use in all my photos and I am very guilty of favoring it. Sorry right side, but my jaw line is weaker, my nose is crooked and my eyebrow is wonky. I still love you but the left side warms this vain girl’s heart.

    Casey Reply:

@Redneck Mommy, You already know how I feel about your hair. *wink*

  16. you’re beautiful. period. can i say period after typing a period?

    Casey Reply:

@melissa @jonahbonah, Yes you can. Period.
    (See what I did there?)
    ((And thank you.))

  17. Any way you look at it, it’s a damn fine face.

    Casey Reply:

@Joules, Damn right. It does exactly what a face is supposed to do on cue and everything.

    Joules Reply:

@Casey, It’s pretty cute to boot:)

    Casey Reply:

    @Joules, *nose kiss*

  18. I have a mole on the right side of my face that I’ve always loved, but obviously it would look weird if it were symmetrical, with moles on both.

    Casey Reply:

@Karen, Well, beauty marks are another story…

  19. This is so very cool! Now has me wondering what sides mine would look like. Like I said thought, you are stunning no matter the side.

    Casey Reply:

@Sue, Thanks! And report back on which side takes the cake!

  20. ok, totally not fair because the lighting isn’t even. 😉
so weird though isn’t it, how asymmetrical we are. in HS, I accidently printed from a negative upside down and couldn’t get over how crooked and twisted my face looked just flipped… like good grief, is this what people see when they look at me, and i’m just used to it?? I have a square jaw and a curved jaw and pretty much refuse to wear my hair up b/c of it.
Anyway, interesting experiment. And we’re all our own worst critics, you’re gorgeous and probably the only one who notices your “flaws” anyway.

    Casey Reply:

@crystal, Yes! I’m so used to what *I* look like in a mirror that to see what I actually look like is WEIRD.

  21. Lindsay Manfredi says:

i love this post, and i love you! you’re perfect!

    Casey Reply:

    @Lindsay Manfredi, NO, YOU’RE PERFECT.
I haven’t forgotten about our taco date, I just have this toddler now who is a HORRIBLE dining companion.

  22. I don’t know which side of my face is my good side, but I’m a little partial to my right side. I have a Marilyn Monroe “beauty mark” on that side that I used to hate and now embrace!

    Casey Reply:

@KaraB, My sister has a beauty mark, I tried to draw on on once, I looked ridiculous.

  23. Yep, another left-side lover here!

I wonder if there’s a correlation between the attractive side and artistic ability? Like, my husband’s good side is the right, but he’s super analytical. But I’m the creative one of the family and my right side is so much prettier…

    Just a thought!

    Casey Reply:

@Kelley, I’ll have to check Cody’s face, because that guy isn’t creative AT ALL.

  24. That is so weird (not that you are weird, mind you). I don’t know if I have a better side or not. This makes me want to run and look in the mirror.

  25. When your right your right, I mean left right, right? Oh you know what I mean (I hope)
